Want to get fit while gardening?
Do you have a garden? If you do, you probably like spending as much time in it as possible. It is a great place to relax and unwind in your hammock after a tough day at work or school.
As well as providing stress relief, your own food that you have grown and beautiful plants, you can also use your garden to keep you fit. Whilst we all love the usual fitness routines such as running, ball sports or swimming, sometimes we want to get fit another way. Here is just a few ways you can get fit while gardening.

But how exactly can you get fit while gardening?
- Sweeping – See some leaves that need sweeping up, grab a brush and do it! You can burn as many as 200 calories per hour if you are sweeping hard. This will totally get your heart beating too!
- Raking – This is an even bigger calorie burner than sweeping. With raking, you can burn as many as 300 calories every hour. Grab a rake after you have done your lawn and get that grass into a pile!
- Tree trimming – Trimming or pruning trees can also be a good calorie burner, thanks to the combination of climbing and sawing. You will definitely get a good work out from this!
- Digging – Everyone knows digging is hard work! When you dig, you are using nearly all parts of your body and this makes it a great form of exercise.
- Hoeing – This is quite similar to digging in how much effort it requires and it can be especially hard on rocky ground!
- Squat whilst weeding – It can be tempting to kneel or use a chair but weeding provides the perfect opportunity to get a leg workout. Squat and hold until you feel the burn – you will definitely get a good leg workout!
- Build something for the garden – Make something out of wood for the garden such as a chicken coop or a playhouse. It will require a lot of effort and build up quite a sweat.
- Cut your lawn – Don’t use a ride-on lawnmower, use one that you can push! You will definitely burn some calories doing this!
- Clean the mess up using a wheelbarrow – A wheelbarrow provides a great upper body workout utilising your forearms, arms, shoulders and back!
It might seem easier said than done to use your garden for working out but you truly can get fit while gardening! I hope these 9 top tips help you to do so!
